Great Britain Names Denhay Mature Traditional Cheddar as Best PDO Cheese

Denhay Farm, in West Dorset England, was a top winner at the 2011 British Cheese Awards, rolling away with the coveted David Reed Trophy for Best PDO/PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Cheese, two gold medals for Mature Traditional and Mature Block Cheese and a silver in the Mild Traditional category.

Denhay Farm is world renowned for their Farmhouse Cheddar which is made only from the high protein milk of their 1000 pampered Friesian Holstein cows.  In summer the farm’s bovine citizens graze in the uniquely lush West Country pastures, while in winter they enjoy indoor accommodations with a 5 star meal plan, including high-energy maize straight from Denhay Farm, and each her own mattress on which to rest.

Senior Cheesemaker, Mike Reeve, ensures that equal unwavering dedication goes into the cheese production process using traditional, time-honored West Country methods.  Over the 12 month meticulously monitored maturation period, Denhay Mature Traditional Cheddar gains its flavor slowly and gracefully, with the first grading at 3 months of age to make certain each wheel will achieve the desired color, texture, smell and taste characteristics.  The result is a beautifully balanced, smooth and creamy, mature cheddar with a lovely lingering, round, nuttiness.

For over 50 years, Denhay Mature Traditional Cheddar has excited the most notable cheese experts in the United Kingdom and abroad.  These latest honors reconfirm Denhay Farm’s consistency and passion for one of the world’s greatest cheeses.

Denhay West Coutry Mature Cheddar works with many types of red wines, especially cabernet sauvignon.  A favorite pairing for white wine is Oregon Pinot Gris, where apple and peach flavors play against the savory and salty aspects of the mature cheddar.
